Nurture Critical Thinking Through DIY Games

In today’s technologically advanced and rapidly changing world, children should be equipped to absorb data and use critical thinking skills to compare, contrast, analyze, and solve complex problems. While innovative STEM classes for kids can play a significant role in doing that, parents should use different ways to nurture their kids’ critical thinking skills. This blog highlights 2 DIY games that’ll help you engage your kid in a healthy thinking exercise.

Match the Colored SticksObjective

This game is designed to teach color and pattern matching to kids. The game involves matching lines of color pattern circles, either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally using popsicle sticks with similar color patterns.

Required Materials

  • Old egg carton
  • Scissor
  • Pencil
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Glue
  • Paper in different colors

How to Make the Game

  • Cut small sized circles from the paper.
  • Paste those circles across the egg carton
  • On a popsicle stick, stick three colored circles according to the pattern you’ve used to stick them on the egg carton.
  • To make it more challenging, make more sticks than there’s space on the carton so that kids think hard.

How to Play the Game?

  • Give a box full of sticks to your kids and ask them to look for the matching or exact pattern on the egg carton.
  • Tell them to search for the pattern carefully.
  • If you see your kids struggling, don’t help them find the solution. Instead, give them a hint that they can look for the patterns either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.

This game is educational, fun, and fosters abstract thinking among kids.

Following the Sequence Objective

This game aims to make children learn how to follow instructions and analyze visual cues and use them to act upon.

Required Materials

  • Plain index card
  • Different colored sticky notes
  • Colored and black marker

How to Make the Game?

  • Take different colored sticky notes and paste them on the floor in random order.
  • Draw that same order on the index card using different colored markers. Make five to six similar copies.
  • Using a black marker, draw arrows from one color square to another on the index card.
  • Draw different combinations of arrows on all of the cards.

How to Play the Game?

  • Give one card to your kids and ask them to walk the path on the ground by looking at the card’s directions.
  • Repeat this activity for all the cards.

This game allows children to look at the bigger picture and analyze situations. It also helps them develop sequencing skills.

Get one of the Least Expensive Franchises.

COMPUCHILD offers Entrepreneurial STEAM™ focused children’s education stem franchise opportunities in the US and Canada.

For K to 4th-grade children, our Lego® Robotics for elementary school program lets children build their robotic models using Lego pieces. It also allows them to connect these self-made models with a computer and program them. The programming enables them to add sound and movement to these models. Similarly, kids can use our ‘Stop Motion Animation and Graphic Design’ course to create their animation movies, which can also be considered a DIY game.

COMPUCHILD’s kids’ education franchise owners don’t need to have a dedicated physical center to operate. Franchisees can manage the franchises through their home or office space too. Get in touch with us for more information.
