Want to Help Your Child Reduce Their Screen Time?

It is 6:00 p.m. Your child has finished school, homework is mostly done, and you are trying to get dinner started. You ask them to put the tablet away, and suddenly the peaceful evening turns into an argument. For many parents, the question is no longer simply how much screen time is too much, but how to help children spend less time on screens without making every transition a battle.

Screens are now part of childhood, learning, and family life. They can help children discover new ideas, stay connected, explore interests, and access educational content. The challenge begins when digital entertainment starts crowding out the experiences children also need: conversation, movement, imaginative play, problem solving, hands-on exploration, and time with other people.

Consider a familiar moment. A child finishes watching a short science video and immediately asks for another one. Then another. Twenty minutes later, they have consumed a great deal of information but have not necessarily done anything with it. Compare that with a child who watches a two minute demonstration and then gets a bowl of water, a few objects, and a simple question: “Which ones do you think will sink?”

The second experience asks the child to predict, touch, test, observe, and explain. That difference matters.

For parents and educators wondering why kids lose interest in learning when screens are removed, the answer may be simpler than we think. Often, the problem is not that children dislike learning. It is that passive entertainment is being replaced with an activity that has not yet become interesting, meaningful, or engaging.

Here are five ways to help children reduce screen time while making room for the kinds of experiences that support healthy development.

1. Replace the screen before you simply remove it

Arthur Glenberg’s research on memory and cognition suggests that human thinking is closely connected to perception and action. In everyday terms, children do not only learn by receiving information. They make meaning by interacting with the world around them.

That gives parents an important practical lesson: when you take something away, give a child something meaningful to do instead.

Imagine telling a nine year old, “No more YouTube.” The child hears a restriction. Now imagine saying, “Let’s see if we can build a paper bridge strong enough to hold these books.” Suddenly there is a challenge to solve.

The goal is not to make every activity educational. It is to make the world outside the screen interesting enough to compete for a child’s attention.

This is one reason getting children excited about learning is often less about adding more instruction and more about creating opportunities for children to wonder, make, test, build, and discover.

2. Make learning active, playful, and social

Kathy Hirsh-Pasek and her colleagues have examined the role of playful learning in childhood and argue that play and learning are not opposites. Children can develop important academic and social skills through activities that are engaging, active, and guided by supportive adults.

Michael Yogman and his colleagues at the American Academy of Pediatrics reinforce this idea in The Power of Play. Their clinical report describes developmentally appropriate play with parents and peers as an important opportunity for children to develop social-emotional, cognitive, language, and self-regulation skills.

For parents, this can be wonderfully simple.

Instead of asking a child to “practice math,” invite them to help double a pancake recipe. Instead of assigning a writing exercise, ask them to create a menu for a pretend restaurant. Instead of another educational video about animals, take a walk and see how many different birds, insects, or plants you can find.

A child who says, “I don’t want to learn,” may happily say, “Can I try it?”

That distinction is important. Good after-school enrichment programs do not have to feel like an extension of the school day. They can give children opportunities to learn through curiosity, collaboration, creativity, and play.

3. Give children some ownership of what happens next

Psychologists Richard Ryan and Edward Deci, through Self-Determination Theory, have emphasized the importance of autonomy, competence, and relatedness in supporting motivation.

Put simply, children are more likely to engage when they feel that they have some choice, believe they can succeed, and feel connected to the people around them.

So instead of saying, “You have to get off the tablet and read,” try offering two or three appealing choices:

“Would you rather build something, draw something, or help me cook?”

The choices do not have to be complicated. A seven year old might choose between building a cardboard invention or making a simple science experiment. A middle schooler might choose between designing a game, learning how something works, or working on a personal project.

The important shift is from “I am taking something away from you” to “Here are some things you can choose to do.”

That sense of ownership can help children gradually develop the ability to choose activities for themselves rather than always waiting for an adult to manage their time.

4. Let children experience the satisfaction of making something

Arthur Glenberg’s work also points toward a broader idea: learning becomes meaningful when it connects with action and the real world.

This is particularly relevant when thinking about screens. A screen can show a child how a robot works. But there is something different about putting pieces together, discovering that the wheels do not move, changing the design, and finally watching the robot travel across the floor.

A child may watch hundreds of videos about building things without developing the same confidence as the child who actually builds something.

For example, a child interested in STEM might spend ten minutes watching a video about bridges. Another child might spend an hour experimenting with craft sticks to discover which bridge design holds the most weight.

Both children encountered information. Only one had to wrestle with a real problem.

This is why making, building, experimenting, and creating can be powerful alternatives to passive screen use. They give children something screens often cannot provide on their own: the physical experience of trying, failing, adjusting, and trying again.

5. Remember that children learn from what adults actually do

Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory provides one of the most important reminders for parents: children learn by observing other people. They do not simply listen to what adults tell them. They watch what adults actually do.

That means a parent cannot realistically expect a child to put away a device while the parent spends the entire evening scrolling on a phone.

The solution is not parental perfection. It is awareness.

Imagine a family sitting together after dinner. The child is watching videos while a parent is answering messages and checking social media. Now imagine the parent putting the phone away and saying, “Let’s go outside for ten minutes.”

The message is more powerful because it is being demonstrated.

Parents can also narrate their own choices: “I’m going to put my phone away while we eat,” or “I want to finish this message, and then I’m going to come play with you.”

Children are constantly learning what adults consider normal, important, and enjoyable.

The larger lesson is reassuring: reducing screen time does not have to mean creating a childhood without technology. It means making sure technology has a place in childhood without allowing it to become the default answer to boredom, frustration, or free time.

Helping Children Build a Life Beyond the Screen

Reducing screen time is ultimately not about winning a daily argument over a device.

It is about helping children discover that there are many satisfying ways to spend their attention.

A child needs opportunities to be bored sometimes, but they also need opportunities to discover what comes after boredom. They need to build something that does not work the first time. They need to ask questions that adults cannot immediately answer. They need to play with friends, make things with their hands, move their bodies, and experience the pride that comes from figuring something out.

Research on play, motivation, cognition, and social learning points in a similar direction: children develop through interaction with people, environments, challenges, and experiences.

Technology will remain an important part of children’s lives. Our responsibility is to make sure it is not the only part.

Sometimes the best alternative to another hour on a screen is surprisingly simple: give a child something real to explore, something meaningful to make, or a problem worth solving. That is where hands-on, experiential learning can begin.
